C.A.R.E. – Commitment – Achievement – Recognition – Excellence

March 15, 2017

Palm Garden treats folks like family. We celebrate the life story of every guest, resident, and family member entrusted to our care by training and retaining team members as members of our own family. It takes extra compassion, but by learning about those life events that make each of us special, Palm Garden Team Members are able to offer a special kind of care. Based not on what we think our guests and residents would like, but on what they need as individual human beings.

Palm Garden proudly announces its 2016 CARE Award recipients. We celebrate their commitment and their achievement. We recognize their empathy, love, and compassion. We celebrate their excellence in pursuit of respect, dignity, and service to others.

Ask one of these award recipients what they do for a living and they will not respond “I clean floors” or “I am a nurse, C.N.A., or van driver.” Each will respond very humbly, “I celebrate life stories at Palm Garden it is my pleasure.”

Jon Irvine, Director of Environmental Services

Employee of the Year 2016

January 5, 2017

Palm Garden of Tampa’s Employee of the year is Jon Irvine – our Environmental Services Supervisor and resident IT Guru.

Jon has been active in the health care industry since 2005, and joined the Palm Garden of Tampa team in the summer of 2011. His specialized training in diesel mechanics, air conditioning and carpentry, as well as his various licenses, made him an immediate and valuable member of our team.

Beyond his technical expertise, Jon brings an enormous level of empathy to the facility. A people person, Jon is always interested in the new residents, their interests and special needs. Long before the “Palm Garden Way” became a corporate ideal, Jon was going the extra mile. And the residents he has touched with his personal intervention are a testimony to that.

It is not unusual for Jon to bring in a specific book or DVD that will catch the interest of a particular resident. He constantly provides the little extras that make the difference between a room and a home. Many times, at our good-bye ceremonies, it is Jon who is remembered most fondly by departing guests.

If a computer is down, or a printer malfunctions, it is almost always Jon who gets a frantic call. And he solves the problem…calmly, with a sense of decorum and deliberation. A last minute room change, a new unreported admission…all are handled with a simple respect and in a deliberate, competent fashion. No fuss, no muss.

His subordinates are treated in a respectful fashion and he has been outstanding in forming a team the facility can rely upon. He even worked a laundry shift so that one of our team could attend the annual Christmas party.

As his supervisor, I have been the most impressed with Jon’s work in the last year. As you all know, this has been a hectic and challenging time – managing a multi-million dollar construction project while maintaining a safe and happy environment for our residents. Through it all, Jon has been steady and stalwart.

When relocating 8 offices into our temporary trailer, Jon stayed until midnight to ensure the computers were hooked up and operational the next morning.   Now that is commitment!!!

With his help, and the hard work of Frank, Ben, the Social Services team and our nursing staff, we have been able to handle major relocations, room remodeling and service changes with little disruption to the smooth functioning of our facility.

If possible, I would give an “Employee of the Year” award to every single member of our team – it has been that kind of year. But if I had to single out an individual to receive such recognition it is without hesitation that I nominate Jon Irvine.

Jon – thank you from the bottom of my heart for your loyalty, hard work and commitment. We are a better facility because of your commitment and dedication to our mission and our values.

CNA of the Year 2016

January 5, 2017

The Palm Garden of Tampa CNA of the Year is Denise Nichols – soon to celebrate her tenth year of service at our facility. Congratulations, Denise.

Denise has been a CNA since 1996 – 20 years of providing healthcare services! Before becoming a CNA Denise was a beautician – these qualities help explain why her patients are so in love with her. Not to mention the comments made by her patients, family members and her peers. Commitment to detail, individual care and going the extra mile – this kind of dedication and attention are why she is so popular and deserving of recognition.

To provide the little extras – hair care and an extra shower…the little details that make living special – that is her special contribution. If a resident is not eating regularly, it is Denise that provides an extra meal and a cheery smile.

It is the testimony of residents and family members that say it best.

“She is a doll baby, very caring and I know if she is here I will always be clean.”

“When I wasn’t able to dress myself, she always made sure I had the right combinations of clothing and that I always looked neat.”

One family member commented, “She is a Super Woman. My dad is very particular and if she can keep him happy that is a huge accomplishment. I could not be happier with her. She is a very caring person.”

Co-workers comment she never turns down anybody who needs her or asks for help. She never gets excited, or flustered, she always remains calm. Her supervisor remarked that Denise is awesome, always helpful and cooperative, polite and approachable.

She is our poster child for customer service, a fabulous CNA who never misses saying good morning to everyone.

Along with her husband Denise raised 3 girls and one boy…and several of them have followed her into the health care profession. When not at work she enjoys caring for her grandchildren. The accomplishment she is proudest of is how she lives her life and her care for others.

While Denise is not one to brag about herself – we will!
